Protecting Our Waterways: Why Boaters Should Join in.

Our rivers are the lifeblood of the UK’s waterways. They provide routes for navigation, habitats for wildlife, and vital spaces for recreation. Yet they are also under pressure from pollution, climate change, and human activity. For those of us who spend time on or near the water, protecting river health is not just about environmental responsibility—it is about ensuring the future security and wellbeing of the waterways we depend on.

This September, The Rivers Trust is once again inviting the public to take part in The Big River Watch, a week-long citizen science survey that helps build a national picture of river health across the UK and Ireland. The event takes place 19–25 September 2025, and anyone can get involved.

Why River Health Matters for Boaters

Clean, safe rivers are central to boating. Poor water quality not only threatens fish and wildlife but can also affect the safety of those who use our waterways. From invasive species to pollution hotspots, boaters often see problems first-hand. Contributing to the Big River Watch survey is a practical way to ensure these issues are recorded and addressed.

By taking part, you will be helping protect:

  • Waterway wellbeing – ensuring our rivers remain safe and healthy spaces for leisure and recreation.
  • Waterway security – protecting against environmental damage that could affect navigation and access.
  • Wildlife protection – supporting habitats for fish, birds, and aquatic species that are part of the boating experience.

How the Big River Watch Works

The Big River Watch is simple and accessible. All you need is a smartphone and a little time by the river.

  1. Download the free Big River Watch app before you set out.
  2. Visit your local river or waterway between 19–25 September 2025.
  3. Complete the survey in the app by observing and recording what you see. This includes wildlife, signs of pollution, flow levels, and other indicators of river health.

The survey takes just 15 minutes, but the data collected will provide vital information for scientists and policymakers working to improve river protection.

Why Boaters Should Get Involved

As regular users of rivers and waterways, boaters have a unique perspective. We see both the beauty and the challenges our rivers face, from litter along the banks to algal blooms or sudden changes in water quality. By sharing these observations through the Big River Watch, we can help secure healthier waterways for everyone.

Boat Gear Direct supports initiatives that enhance waterway wellbeing, protection, and security. Taking part in The Rivers Trust’s Big River Watch is an easy and powerful step boaters can take to safeguard the future of our rivers.
