The Real Purpose of Boat Stands
When you’re buying boat stands in the UK or looking at boat stands for sale, it’s
common to see confusion about how much weight each stand should carry. Many
people assume that if a boat weighs eight tonnes, each of four boat supports or
yacht stands should hold two tonnes each.
That’s not how the system works.
Boat stands are designed to support and stabilise the hull, not hold the entire mass
of the vessel. The boat sits on wooden bearers or keel blocks placed under the
keel. These take the full mass loading. The stands on either side are simply there to
stop the boat from leaning or shifting.
How the Load Is Carried
Think of the keel and bearers as the foundation. The boat keel stands or
adjustable boat stands at the sides are there to keep the boat upright and steady,
not to lift it.
Even in strong winds or during maintenance, the, heavy duty boat stands only take
a small fraction of the total load, typically less than ten percent. Their job is to stop
sideways movement, not to hold the vessel up. The mass loading is on the blocks
directly under the keel.
Two connection points are situated on each stand, to fit storm chains, ratchet straps
or ropes to brace the stands across the beam, of the vessel.
Four, Six or Eight Stands – Which Is Right?
For smaller boats, four stands may be enough. For larger hulls, or if you want more
stability, using six, or even eight boat support stands, is common and practical. It
spreads the lateral support more evenly along the hull.
It’s not unusual to include a further stand, to allow the movement of other stands
when antifouling or cleaning the hull.
But whether you use four, six or eight, the principle stays the same — the stands
steady the boat and the bearers take the weight.
Safe Use and Owner Responsibility
You must always assess your own setup and loading. Every hull shape, yard
surface, and storage layout is different.
EYE Marine does not take responsibility for:
How stands are positioned or adjusted
The condition of the ground surface
The torque, locating, or any adjustments made during setup
It’s the user’s duty to make sure the vessel is safely supported, on level ground, and
correctly balanced on the keel bearers.
The Key Point
Boat stands do not need to be rated at a quarter of the total boat weight. The boat’s
mass rests on the wooden bearers and keel blocks, not on the side stands. The
stands are stabilisers, not lifters.
Using the right setup keeps your boat safe, prevents hull stress, and ensures that
your boat stands or yacht supports do exactly what they are designed to do —
keep your vessel upright, stable, and secure.
